October 6

Hello MS Parents,
Happy October! We have had a very successful first month of school in the Middle School. Our recent coffee house was a great success. We had a profit of over $500 which was wonderful for a first time. We received compliments from several guests including “This was the best coffee house ever!”. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time and efforts. If you didn’t have a chance to volunteer this time, our next coffee house will on Thursday, November 18.

Academically, students have been settling into our routines. In ELA, students are deep into their novel study, using literature circles to explore themes of independence and interdependence. We have also begun our Socratic Seminars, which allow students the opportunity to guide their own discussions and explore a piece of text. In science, students have completed 2 labs related to weathering and are learning about the scientific process in preparation for Science Fair which happens in March. Though the project date is a long way off, they are beginning to understand the steps of the process and to brainstorm ideas for their own projects. In Social Studies, as part of our study on Pre-Civil War America, the students are completing a short group project on the Underground Railroad station in the Capital District. They are also continuing to work on their cycle-long scrapbook project.

On October 14, students will be making and serving a hot lunch to students in the school whose parents purchase a meal. The school lunch fundraiser is another fun and educational experience for students. Also, next week we will be kicking off our annual Food Drive for Concerns U in Rensselaer, NY. We have helped Concerns U for several years and this year they gave us a specific goal of collecting 100 jars of gravy and 100 boxes of instant potatoes. Fliers will be coming home with more information about this event very soon.

Please remember to sign up for parent conferences which are scheduled for the end of the month. Call Meg in the office to set up your time.

As always, please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
The Middle School Team
