Nov 7

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to sit and talk with us about your child’s prgress to date.  It is always good to make the time to sit and talk.  Your children are terrific and we love teaching them!

The last week of October was filled with the hustle and bustle of preparing for Halloween, as well as getting ready for Diwali on November 5th.   On Tuesday the 26th we collected rocks, cleaned and painted them orange on the 27th.  We completed our rock jack o’lanterns on Thursday the 28th.  In addition, on Tuesday the 26th we started our diyas (oil lamps/candles) for Diwali.   On Wednesday the 27th we made candy corn cup cakes as our Halloween treat, which we shared together on Thursday!  YUM!  I apologize for having NO pictures from our cupcake creating/baking and our jack o’lantern pumpkin making projects… I accidentally left my camera on my desk at home all that week L )

Last week was filled with many lessons and preparations for our Friday Diwali celebration.  We made triangular shaped flags with a stylized Om or diya traced on each.   We painted our diyas on Wednesday and Thursday and were all ready for the celebration on Friday.

Friday was great fun! Manasa brought her grandma, Radha, to school who helped us dress for the occasion.  She brought clothing for the girls to wear and we borrowed scarves for the boys who wanted to dress as well.  Then she dressed us, Ashley and Nancy, in saris.  At about 10:30 AM, after our music class, we went to the gymnasium with the other primary and lower elementary classes.  We were treated to several prayers by several primary students; a beautiful presentation/explanation about Diwali by Manasa’s dad, Guha; we learned several Indian dance movements from Amar and Salila’s (Cassandre & Lourdes’s class) grandma; and were treated to sweets in our classroom.  It was a lot of fun!  Thank you to Radha for ALL of her help and Guha for his presentation.

Coming up this week is Parent-Child night on Wednesday the 10th.  This is a time when your child can teach you one or two lessons/works that she/he works on in the classroom.  It goes from 5 to 6 pm, which is split in two.  So that ½ of the class can spend a ½ hour with their parents at a time and the room does not become too crowded.   I believe that children whose last names begin with A to L are the frist ½ hour and M to Z are the second ½.  I am sure that Moira will send a confirmation/reminder email this week with the specifics.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at 283-5400.  We will return your call as soon as possible. As well you can reach us at our email addresses: nhillengas@nycap.rr.com and aciccone@woodlandhill.org .

Have a nice weekend!

  Nancy & Ashley
