It was another short but busy week for us leading up to St. Patrick’s Day on Thursday. On Monday we started decorating our bench cubbies for the Gala coming up on April 1st. We are first painting wet-on-wet water color sheets and then cutting and pasting them to create animals, flowers and other beautiful designs to cover the bench. It looks fantastic so far, and we hope to finish by the end of next week.
Tuesday was a beautiful sunny day so we were able to do some rainbow and light refraction experiments with the sunlight pouring in our classroom windows. We also put out sparkly strawberries for food prep (which many children proclaimed was “the best food prep ever!”): we “painted” each strawberry with sour cream, then rolled them in sparkly cinnamon sugar. YUM! On Wednesday we read Tomie dePaola’s Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato, learned about Ireland’s Great Potato Famine, and then used potatoes to do some potato printing art.
We had a festive St. Patrick’s Day with everyone wearing green, coloring shamrock and leprechaun pins and taking turns baking Irish soda bread. Isabela entertained us with some wonderful Irish step dancing and also brought in a genuine blackthorn shillelagh (an Irish walking stick) to show the class (thank you, Isabela!). In the afternoon we read about the legend of the Blarney Stone in Cork and for Writing Workshop wrote poems full of “blarney”! The children then chose their own little Blarney Stones from out back to kiss for luck.
It was a pleasure meeting with those of you who came to Friday’s conferences! This Monday, March 21st is our second conference day so there are no classes; Enrichment is available.
We will see everyone back on Tuesday when we will depart Ireland and add France to our European passports The Louvre will be the highlight of our tour as we try still life paintings like Cézanne and dabbing dots like Monet. As always, we welcome any souvenirs/pictures/books, etc. you’d like to share! The sound of the week next week will be “T”. Please send an item beginning with “T” to school on Tuesday.
Have a great weekend!
