April 8

April 8, 2011

Dear Parents,

Spring is here to stay—hooray! The aroma of damp earth and the sound of the robins chirping outside our open windows is certainly refreshing. Farewell to you, Old Man Winter.

The script for this year’s play, Julius Caesar, is out. Please guard these scripts with your life! Older students should bring their scripts to and from their homes to practice their lines. We hope to be off-script by Thursday, May 5, so practice, practice, practice! We will have a Shakespeare Crew Day when we come back from break, and will be putting a call out for parent volunteers to help us with the behind-the-scenes work. Stay tuned for more information and the sign up sheet. We will specifically need a parent or two that has a sewing machine and would be willing to sew togas for the class.

In class we have been working on a variety of subjects and reviewing for the NYS Language and Math Exams. In cultural, we are studying the Ancient Maya, the lymphatic system, and the brain. In math and geometry, we are studying algebra, adding and subtracting integers, and volume. In language arts, we are working on the placement of commas, hyphenated words, and dramatic compounds. Students also completed PowerPoint slide shows about their favorite punctuation and are presenting them to the class. We have also been working on Junior Great Books stories and Essays.

We worked on our portfolios today, so there will be quite a bit of work coming home in the WHMS folder.

Fifth Year Autobiography:

Rough draft is due on Wednesday, April 13th. (“Remember Me”) This is your last chapter! Over the break, students should begin to gather photographs that they would like to include in their final presentation. The photos should be copied or emailed to me for printing. There should be at least 2-3 photographs per chapter. We will discuss this more during class next week.

Homework: This week’s homework will be the NYS testing booklets, spelling and memorizing lines for Julius Caesar. Note: I will not be sending home any homework over spring break except for the sixth year Senior Project and the Julius Caesar script. Please see below.

Have a great weekend!

Sherrie
